I was pleased to be able to fly from Boston to Los Angeles first class last week.\u00a0 Thank you, frequent flyer miles!\u00a0 The airline was United.<\/p>\n

I was a bit shocked at the food served in first class, though.\u00a0<\/p>\n

First they went around and said, “Warm nuts?”\u00a0 Well, sure, why not?\u00a0 Except the nuts they handed me were stone cold.\u00a0 Nothing wrong with that, but why call them “warm nuts” when they aren’t?<\/p>\n

Next, dinner.\u00a0 I had a chicken breast thing which tasted fine.\u00a0 However, it was accompanied by a “salad” that was simply one kind of lettuce in a bowl.\u00a0 One kind of lettuce and nothing else.\u00a0 That’s not a salad.\u00a0 It’s especially not a first-class salad.\u00a0 It’s a bowl of lettuce.<\/p>\n

Even weirder were the side dishes.\u00a0 They consisted of 1) potatoes and 2) corn and lima beans.\u00a0 Hello?\u00a0 While they are all vegetables in a botanical sense, in terms of the food pyramid they are starches, not vegetables.\u00a0 Potatoes and broccoli would have been appropriate.\u00a0 Corn\/lima beans and spinach would have been fine.<\/p>\n

But what moron do they have at United planning FIRST CLASS meals who thinks it’s appropriate for both side dishes to a meal to be starches?\u00a0 That’s a mistake an eighth-grade Home Economics student wouldn’t make.<\/p>\n

However, United came close to redeeming itself with the dessert.\u00a0 It was hot fudge sundaes!\u00a0 Actual hot fudge sundaes!\u00a0 Never thought I’d have that on a plane.\u00a0 They were constructed fresh right in front of you.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, come on, United.\u00a0 If you can come up with a winner like that for dessert, you should be able to do better with the actual meal.\u00a0 Aim higher, possums.<\/p>\n
