I worry a lot about Alzheimer\u2019s.\u00a0 I guess it\u2019s natural at my advanced age.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t help that I can sense my memory deteriorating daily.\u00a0 A few weeks ago I couldn\u2019t think of word \u201cToronto\u201d for over an hour.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 \u201cThat big city in Ontario . . you know, the biggest city in Canada . .\u00a0 WTF is it called?!<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 This really actually scared me.<\/p>\n

Stumbling around Europe, though, I\u2019m getting a surprise boost to my memory morale.\u00a0 How?\u00a0 In my pathetic, yet largely successful, forays into French.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yesterday I was in a charming little Chinese restaurant where I made friends with a pretty pure white cat named Vanilla.\u00a0 Yes, inside the restaurant.\u00a0 At my table.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is not my complaint \u2013 I think all business should have pets, and people who are allergic can just order off of the internet.<\/p>\n

Anyway, the reason I know the fuzzy one\u2019s name is that I somehow pulled this question out of my ass:\u00a0 \u201cComment s\u2019apppelle-t-il?\u201d\u00a0 What is his name?\u00a0 Now, this is not at all impressive except for the fact that I haven\u2019t studied French since 9th<\/sup> and 10th<\/sup> grades.\u00a0 And kids, by 9th<\/sup> and 10th<\/sup> grades, I mean 1974 and 1975.\u00a0 Yeah, before the Second World War.\u00a0 I was NEVER fluent in French by any means.\u00a0 And I don\u2019t mean to suggest in any way that my miniature linguistic successes such as asking a cat\u2019s name are impressive on their own.\u00a0 I just mean they make me feel like perhaps my memory hasn\u2019t been completely shot to merde<\/em> yet after all.\"lion\"<\/a><\/p>\n

By the way, I went back to the same restaurant today, and was disappointed to learn that Vanilla was sleeping in the back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I guess we should be kind. The Belgians are juggling so many damn languages, it's unreasonable to expect them to spell everything correctly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The owner of the restaurant is a very nice Chinese guy, and even though he knows I speak English and he speaks French, when we speak to each other, I use my shaky French and he uses his shaky English.\u00a0 Because we\u2019re just attempting to be polite.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another laptop scare last night!\u00a0<\/p>\n

I forgot that I didn\u2019t have the stupid thing plugged in, and it ran out of power right in the middle of a Very Important World of Warcraft dungeon run.\u00a0 Blast.\u00a0 I plugged in, fired up the computer again . . . and, to my horror, it would no longer connect the internet!\u00a0 Consternation!<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t panic.\u00a0 I tried every troubleshooting technique I could think of.\u00a0 I did a system restore.\u00a0 I disabled and enabled the wifi device.\u00a0 I rebooted several times.\u00a0 Nothing.<\/p>\n

I sheepishly took the beast in to work today, and as I expected, Bert solved the problem in about two minutes.\u00a0 Now I know what to do if it happens again:<\/p>\n

The machine was stuck on a bad address.\u00a0 This fixed it.\u00a0 Relief\u203c<\/p>\n
