Completely different topic! During the last couple of years, I\u2019ve been very entertained and inspired by a writer named John Scalzi.\u00a0 He has rapidly growing stature in the science fiction field, but like me he also writes about movies and video games, as well as lots of other types of writing.\u00a0 His long-running blog, The Whatever<\/a>, is full of gossipy anecdotes, testimonials and opinions on, among many other things, the writer\u2019s life.\u00a0\"john<\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always known what a lazy writer I am.\u00a0 That, frankly, was a major reason for keeping this travel journal.\u00a0 Just a test of my writing endurance:\u00a0 Could I successfully maintain a daily blog for a twelve week period?\u00a0 I\u2019ve been pleased with the results, mostly, and, inspired by Mr. Scalzi in several different ways, I\u2019m eager to roll my sleeves up and try to earn more of my living by writing.<\/p>\n

An area I\u2019m interested in investigating is, duh, travel writing. I enjoy traveling so much, and I clearly like talking about it with my keyboard.\u00a0 I wonder if I can find some outlets where I can submit some travel writing?<\/p>\n

\"old<\/a>It\u2019s important for me to feel inspiration at this moment, because, as this job is winding down and I don\u2019t have much else in the pipeline, I\u2019m starting to feel the creeping \u201cWhat If I Don\u2019t Get Another Gig For Six Months\u201d dreads.\u00a0 You might think I\u2019d have a ton of money stockpiled after this assignment, but it\u2019s going to be a surprisingly small amount.\u00a0 No, it\u2019s not because I\u2019m a crack addict or a shopaholic (anyone who knows my wardrobe knows this isn\u2019t true).\u00a0 It\u2019s because whever you start working after not working for a while, you\u2019re digging yourself out of a hole for a certain number of paychecks.\u00a0 In my case, it was a big damn hole.<\/p>\n

So the reason I won\u2019t have a year\u2019s worth of dollars ready to take care of me when I return to Los Angeles is that I\u2019ve paid off three of my four credit cards and gotten caught up (to a certain degree) on back taxes.\u00a0 Not completely caught up, I hasten to add.\u00a0 But I\u2019ve made good progress.<\/p>\n

So I need to keep working, damnit.<\/p>\n

I also need to stop depending so utterly on this software training work.\u00a0 I love doing it, and I enjoy the jobs when they come.\u00a0 But they are too sporadic these days.\u00a0 They should be supplemental income, not my only income.\u00a0 And if I\u2019m not willing (or able?) to get an in-house training job, I need to have a second major source of income.\u00a0 Perhaps it\u2019s stupid to hope writing could be that source, but still, it\u2019s a goal.\u00a0 The idea feels right inside my head.\u00a0 We\u2019ll see.\"writers-market_medium\"<\/a><\/p>\n
