  4. Mud<\/strong>:\u00a0 This unusually involving coming of age story features stunning writing and an tremendous supporting performance by Matthew McConaughey.<\/li>\n
  5. The Way, Way Back<\/strong>:\u00a0 This oddly nostalgic story of painful youth had tons of zip and freshness, with a knockout career highlight performance by Sam Rockwell.<\/li>\n
  6. Blue Jasmine<\/strong>:\u00a0 Woody Allen\u2019s best film in years delves painfully and irresistibly into Streetcar Named Desire territory, with spectacular results.<\/li>\n

    12 Years a Slave.\u00a0 There, I\u2019ve said it.\u00a0 To paraphrase friends of mine who have had the courage to note the emperor\u2019s nakedness:\u00a0 It\u2019s like getting punched in the face for three hours.\u00a0 And just because slavery is an important and legitimate issue doesn\u2019t mean I have to pretend\u00a0this movie<\/em>\u00a0is important.\u00a0 Newsflash: I know slavery was bad.\u00a0 It was horrible and shameful and it\u2019s an ugly, ugly blight on our history.\u00a0 But that\u2019s a lesson I didn\u2019t need to learn, and this movie showed me nothing else but that. \u00a0Feel guilty, feel guilty, feel guilty, it\u2019s saying.\u00a0 I\u2019ve said it before and I\u2019ll say it again:\u00a0 I do not like Steve McQueen as a director.\u00a0 Sure, the cast was excellent, and they\u2019ll get some nominations.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t have to like the movie.\u00a0 And Brad Pitt\u2019s cameo was stupid.<\/p>\n

    The Spectacular Now.\u00a0 I\u2019ve said it before, and I\u2019ll say it again.\u00a0 Drunks are not interesting.<\/p>\n

    The Great Beauty:\u00a0 Snorefest from Italy which somehow had all the critics gushing.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Underrated!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Side Effects \u2013 Even the presence of Catherine Zeta-Jones couldn\u2019t ruin Steve Soderberg\u2019s sly psychopharmaceutical thriller.<\/p>\n

    Disconnect \u2013 featuring yet another terrific performance by Most Improved Actor Frank Grillo.<\/p>\n

    Oblivion \u2013 Seriously.\u00a0 I liked it.<\/p>\n

    White House Down.\u00a0 Shut up, it was very fun.<\/p>\n

Starring herself, Radha Mitchell, Christian Bale and John Leguizamo, and the results could actually prompt the Heat Death of the Universe.<\/p>\n

    Stoker. No.\u00a0 Just no.<\/p>\n

    The Place Beyond the Pines:\u00a0 I also hated Blue Valentine.\u00a0 Let\u2019s face it, I just don\u2019t like the work of director Derek Cianfrance.<\/p>\n

    *TIE:\u00a0 Elysium and Upstream Color, two SHOCKINGLY disappointing second films from oh-so-promising directors.\u00a0 Elysium gets points for taking an intriguing premise and doing absolutely nothing interesting with it.\u00a0 Upstream Color scores big because it\u2019s one of the most pretentiously opaque and obtuse films ever made.\u00a0 It made me wish I was watching Tree of Life again.<\/p>\n

    Pacific Rim:\u00a0 Why on earth did Guillermo del Toro feel a need to make a Transformers movie?\u00a0 Even Charlie Hunnam\u2019s stunning physique, Idris Elba\u2019s stern charisma, and Max Martini\u2019s steamy smolder couldn\u2019t keep me awake.<\/p>\n

    Man of Steel \u2013 What a borefest.\u00a0 Even Henry Cavill\u2019s ridiculous pulchritude couldn\u2019t save this boring, overlong piece of dreck.<\/p>\n
