The latest salvo in the absurd \u201cWar on Christmas\u201d initiative from the Religious Right comes from Merry Hyatt, a 61-year old substitute teacher in Redding, California.\u00a0 She is attempting to force a state ballot initiative <\/a>requiring public schools to expose students to overtly Christian Christmas music<\/em>.\u00a0 Yeah, you read that correctly.<\/p>\n

\u00a0For some reason, many arrogant conservative Christians in our country don\u2019t so much like the Constitution.\u00a0 They feel the Establishment Clause (which mandates the clear separation of Church and State) shouldn\u2019t apply to THEIR religion, since it\u2019s the \u201cmajority religion\u201d and the (supposed) religion of our Founding Fathers.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Hyatt is appalled that her students aren\u2019t required to sing about Jesus in public school.\u00a0 She\u2019s convinced that if they sing about Jesus, all school problems will melt away.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThese kids, they need it, \u201d she said. \u201cThey need to see that we believe in Jesus, and He is the Prince of Peace. That\u2019s why we are the best country on Earth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Really, Merry?\u00a0 THAT\u2019s what makes this a great country?\u00a0 Not our Constitution?\u00a0 If that\u2019s so, then why isn\u2019t EVERY Christian nation \u201cthe best country on Earth\u201d?\u00a0 Does think the U.S. is the ONLY nation on Earth with a Christian majority?\u00a0 I sure hope she isn\u2019t teaching Social Studies!<\/p>\n

\u00a0Also note than whenever these theocrats demand that the Establishment Clause be broken, it\u2019s ONLY for THEIR religion.\u00a0 Do you think Merry would be out there attempting to gather the required 464, 000 in order to force Hanukah songs to be singing public schools?\u00a0 How about Kwanzaa carols?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0There\u2019s a word for what Merry Hyatt is:\u00a0 A bully.\u00a0 That\u2019s what anyone who clamors for the Tyranny of the Majority is, a bully.\u00a0 Is Hyatt really so clueless that she thinks the Constitution doesn\u2019t apply to her religion, but just to all OTHER religions?\u00a0 More likely:\u00a0 she believes her God\u2019s law supersedes the Constitution.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0There\u2019s a really effective way for Merry to make sure that children she cares about hear Christian music in school:\u00a0 Send those kids to a private, religious school<\/em>.\u00a0 The fact that she thinks taxpayer dollars \u2013 that is, money collected from Hindu Californians, Jewish Californians, Sikh Californians, Muslim Californians, not to mention agnostic an atheist Californians.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hyatt’s quote about the kids “needing” her Christian music\u00a0makes clear that she\u00a0doesn’t care about the constitutional issue involved here.\u00a0 Like so many true believers, she thinks rules shouldn’t apply to her since she’s on God’s Team.\u00a0 Her position is un-American.\u00a0 Demanding that the law insert her religion into public schools is simply an indefensible position.<\/p>\n

All Christians should be embarrassed by this clown, and if she has any intelligent friends, they need to hand her a copy of the U.S. Constitution and encourage her to get a clue.<\/p>\n
