Had a Munch-themed day.\u00a0 He\u2019s the most famous artist from Norway, and the Munch museum is a lovely place.\u00a0 Currently they have a fascinating exhibit comparing Munch with Van Gogh.<\/p>\n

Why pair these two artists?\u00a0 Well, it seems that in 2008 the curators of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam polled visitors about which Van Gogh paintings they were sorry were not on exhibit there in Amsterdam.\u00a0 The winners were \u201cStarry Night\u201d (of course), the self-portraits\u2026. and \u201cThe Scream.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah.\u00a0 \u201cThe Scream.\u201d<\/p>\n

This gave them an idea.\u00a0 If the public confused Van Gogh and Munch already, \u00a0why not do an exhibit exploring their relationship?<\/p>\n

It turns out there\u2019s actually a lot to think about when comparing Munch and Van Gogh.\u00a0 Even though Edvard Munch was ten years younger than his Dutch colleague, they both entered the art world the same year.\u00a0 Van Gogh was a huge influence on Munch.<\/p>\n

I had a great time at the exhibit, and was happy to see (one of) the original \u201cScream\u201ds, as well as one of my favorite Van Gogh\u2019s, \u201cThe Potato Eaters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Afterwards I took the streetcar to the Ekeberg Slope, a large wooded park that contains, among many other things, the spot depicted in Munch\u2019s \u201cThe Scream.\u201d\u00a0 While at that spot working on my stupid Scream photo, I fell into a terrific extended conversation with a mountain biker.<\/p>\n

He made an interesting observation about Americans.\u00a0 \u201cYou are a much more mobile people than we are, \u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cIn Norway, if the main business of a town closes, the people who worked there just stay put and go on public assistance.\u00a0 In America they\u2019d be much more likely to move somewhere else to look for work.\u201d\u00a0 I wonder if he\u2019s right?<\/p>\n

There were some lovely views from this high park. \u00a0This group of new office buildings are referred to as “The Bar Code.”<\/p>\n

I also had a great time taking a Segway tour of Oslo.\u00a0 I had two tourguides, who for some reason were both named Andy.\u00a0 \u201cOur boss is also named Andy, \u201d they admitted.\u00a0 Some things are best left unexplained.<\/p>\n

The only hitch to this particular Segway tour was when I fell.\u00a0 My hands slipped off of the controls when I hit a bump and the device went forward and I fell straight back.\u00a0 My foot was black and blue for nearly a month.\u00a0 Worse, I might have jostled something in my spine, as a week later I began having nerve pain in the extremeties.\u00a0 My doc and I are currently investigating. \u00a0The symptoms are gradually getting better, which I think is a combination of natural healing and the fact that I’ve been lifting weights for the last five weeks; surely getting a little stronger would help this sort of injury.<\/p>\n

By the way, I saw this image on a wall in a hall in a mall in Oslo. \u00a0Does it remind anyone of a video game from last year?<\/p>\n
