I think it’s time I wrote a book, don’t you?

But what to write?

The classic advice given to fledgling authors is “Write what you know.”  Okay . . . I can get behind that, but shouldn’t I also pick a subject which OTHER people would WANT to know about?

So I turn to you, Faithful Reader.

Here are some topics that I know Very Well.  Please leave a comment as to which should be the subject of my book.  Feel free to suggest a topic that’s NOT on the list.

Things I Know Well

  • Bitterness
  • Regret
  • World of Warcraft
  • Snacks

  1. Write the great American novel about an addicted WoW player who becomes disenchanted with the game and bitter at his poorly run guild. He has to deal with reintegration into real life but feels deep regret at leaving WoW behind.

He fails to see this is an addiction and is in denial. To cope he self medicates with food, using snacks as a replacement addiction. He then decides to make an expose of RPGs al la Michael Moore and as a bonus he gets to travel a lot in the course of making the documentary.

Further, during the course of making this movie her comes to understand his addiction and finds freedom and peace with his decision. After the movie becomes a hit he gets to appear on Anderson Cooper 360 and who knows where that might lead.

  2. I’ve got a title for you, at least: “Asleep at the Wheel: My Adventures Falling Through the Rabbit Hole”. In it, you could share candid tales of how living with sleep apnea defined your life and how others perceived you. Perhaps you might even build it into a fictional account of how your sleep deprivation eventually caused you to descend into a world of paranoid delirium and madness.

  3. How about how to avoid snacks and deal with bitterness and regret while playing WoW?
Seriously, what sells is sex, self-help, self-help sex, self-help dressed up as how-to and personal stories, and sex as self-help.
How about how you end up where you are, not where you planned to be, and still keep putting one foot in front of the other?
I suggest you write what you want to hear. You have a great writing, and speaking, rhythm. And most of all start, start writing anything, if it does not feel right after the first chapter write something else. Write every day and write often.
Now if I could only find a way to do that myself.

  4. Load up on too many of all the best snacks and follow your twisted imagination down memory lane and back again to next summer’s Shadowland reunion.
